Congratulations to UNI’s Michael Bieleny who competed at the Australian Masters Athletics Championships in Melbourne on the weekend. Competing in the 55-59 age group, Mike came home with a bronze in the 800m in a time of 2:25 on the Friday, a silver medal in the 1500m on the Saturday in a time of 4:45 and a silver in the 5000m in a time of 17:32. Great to see “Iron Mike” returning to competition in such fine form after having to take time out with injuries in recent years.
Here is Mikes race report I have copied for your reading.
“Have pulled up ok thanks Mel (but might take a day off) or two ! Australian Masters Athletics Champs was a great event . Melbourne weather didn’t let us down with wet, dry, cold, warm and windy conditions over the weekend . My first event was the 800m on Friday . Struggled with the pace of the shorter distance and the old legs wanted to quit in the final straight but finished with the bronze medal and a time of 2.25 . The 1500m on Saturday was a slightly better result . Made the podium again with a silver medal . Only 0.03 of a second separating myself and third place after a tough and exciting sprint to the finish. I ran 4.45.36, third place ran 4.45.39 can’t get much closer than that. Sunday was 5000m day, conditions were fairly windy so another tough run, a silver medal and a time of 17.32.”
