Hi members and running fans

The main news this week is the club’s summer track season wind up bbq/picnic Sunday afternoon from 4pm at Crook Street Park Strathdale at the McIvor Road end.

Not a lot of other news just more pumping up our new you beaut online membership and apparel purchasing. At www.bendigouniathsclub.org.au click on the ‘join now’ tab in the big orange banner at the top of the page and you will be whisked off to BUAC’s Eventbrite page from where it should all be straightforward.

Clarification on the family size / membership issue mentioned last week is:- with either one or two adult registrations you can register as many kids in your family as you want (so the ‘$100 family membership’ is not completely accurate, you can have a $50 ‘family’ membership if only one parent is running).

On the running front the March 17 Round 1 College Classic is drawing ever closer.

This Saturday is the final day for the season for both Little Aths and Senior Aths. Both are being held on the grass at Tom Flood with Little Aths starting at 9.20 and Senior Aths from about 12 with a 1500m at 12.30 and 3k at 2.45. Senior aths is free as usual for AV registered runners and a cheap $5 for anyone else who wants to have a go. Aths Bendigo’s idea is anyone interested in running in the distance races the following weekend at the Madison (entries close Monday 4th) can have a try on Saturday.

20 minute pacer was definitely seen at Parkrun last weekend now there is talk of a 25 minute pacer also?

Another Park&Street challenge has been scheduled for Sunday arvo at 4.30pm check out their FB page for details.

Next Tuesday night’s track series run will be at Lake Weeroona.

Last week

The Platt-Feurherdt trail endurance combo strolled around the Rollercoaster Mt Dandenong 21.5k course.

Tue night at the Melbourne Uni 5k Track night Andy once again threatened the 14 minute barrier finishing 3rd in the A-race whilst Kye & apparently Fraser Walsh ran in the B-race getting 16 something minute times.

10 questions with Phil Shambrook

  1. Where were you born? Plymouth, Devon, England
  2. What schools did you go to? A number of different primary schools as we moved around then finished of at Southway Comprehensive in Plymouth. Did an apprenticeship in the Army in the UK, an MBA by distance learning, an engineering degree at the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham in Wiltshire. Followed a few years later with a degree in recreation and sport, and a Master of Health Science at EIT, Napier, New Zealand.
  3. Favorite food? Anything that begins with ‘F’ and ends in ‘ood’.
  4. Favorite film? National Lampoons Animal House. Incredibly non-PC but John Belushi played a great part.
  5. Do you listen to music/podcast when you run? Tried it on a couple of occasions, but prefer to listen to nature since I do most of my running off-road.
  6. Preferred running shoes? Any that don’t cost too much. I’m lucky I can wear pretty much anything. So if I see a shoe less than $100 I’ll buy it.
  7. Which watch do you use and why? Been a longtime user of Garmin watches, primarily because they work. As a result I’ve never really considered other brands. Currently have a Forerunner 935 as I do swim and ride.
  8. Favorite event you have done? Kepler Challenge in New Zealand. We were blessed with great weather and it is truly one of New Zealand’s great tracks.
  9. Have you always been a runner or what got you started? I’ve always been active but only really focussed on running in the last few years. Spent many years riding a tandem – still have the world record for longest distance riding a tandem around the world. Started triathlon when we moved to New Zealand, then moved to more running focussed events in the past 7 or 8 years. Just a progression really as the number and diversity of trail running events grew. and along with it the opportunity to explore and visit some great country.
  10. Describe your current weekly training plan. Been struggling with motivation recently and work has been interfering, but when all is going well I’l run a flat 10k maybe with some tempo efforts on Monday morning, bike an hour or so Monday evening; Tuesday is a morning swim and aerobic hills aiming for fast legs on descents in the evening. Wednesday hill efforts in the morning, hour or so cycling in the afternoon. Thursday morning swim, evening trail run for an hour. Friday rest day. Saturday aim to get a mostly flat steady 10k+ before parkrun then parkrun, maybe a swim and/or bike before cross country in the afternoon (in winter). Sunday long steady trail run
